Today I was reflecting on the fact that very often great ideas and great changes in life happen in extraordinary and/or emergency situations.
So it was with the birth of the Albergo Diffuso.
We are in Friuli, it is 6 May 1976 and it is 9pm. These are the coordinates of one of the worst earthquakes ever to hit Italy, causing almost 1,000 deaths and 45,000 homeless.
The earthquake caused damage to 12,000 buildings and in the years to come it became a priority to restore the destroyed villages.
They therefore began to look for new models of hospitality that were able to enhance the value of the houses as they were renovated.
Thus was born the idea of the Albergo Diffuso as we know it today.
This story makes me reflect on the fact that we all live in a kind of inner balance. We are all nice and comfortable when suddenly, in life, something happens that gives us a nice jolt. Change is never comfortable and it is necessary to find, with difficulty, a new balance.
In my opinion, the idea of the Albergo Diffuso represented a great change because it created a real alternative tourism that had nothing to do with the traditional hotel model.

From the idea of a HOTEL enclosed within four walls, we moved on to a Horizontal Hotel, i.e. spread throughout the territory and capable of integrating into the culture of the local community.
And, was this change easy?

The earthquake occurred in 1976 and the first partial experience of Albergo Diffuso occurred in 1994 in Sauris, a municipality in Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
Eighteen years after the tremor of the earthquake, change was born.
The change, however, has only timidly begun and who knows how many years it will take for it to become a trademark of Tourism in Italy.
Some people really appreciate the kind of sustainable tourism offered by the Albergo Diffuso and the numbers are encouraging.
