An unforgettable trek in the Calà del Sasso

Today I want to tell you about a place where time seems to stand still and the destination of an unforgettable trek. It is an uncrowded place but full of charm. I am talking about the Calà del Sasso and its 4444 steps.

Yes, you got that right! I admit I have not counted them but I trust that they are indeed 4444.

This route had been built at the end of the 14th century in order to transport timber from the Asiago Plateau 7 Municipalities. The timber was then transported by river, across the river Brenta, to Venice where it was used mainly for shipbuilding.

You can reach the starting point in about 40 minutes (I advise you to do the route uphill and not downhill as it may be slippery in some sections).

This is not a walk but a real mountain hike.

It is not a route suitable for improvised hikers, but it is also perfectly passable by families with children in tow.

In the first part of the route you will soon realise that the gradient is challenging, especially if you are not trained. Moreover, the exposure of the street, especially during the early hours of the day, is completely shaded. You will therefore have to be very careful not to slip on the still damp steps.

Once you have overcome these initial difficulties, you will be able to enjoy a very suggestive and hidden route that will allow you to reach Sasso di Asiago in about two hours.

Walking along the Calà del Sasso is a real plunge into the past where you can breathe the same air that the timber carriers used to breathe. You will be able to experience first-hand the difficulties encountered hundreds of years ago by people who made a living from this strenuous activity.

I can assure you that this walk will remain in your heart and in that of all the people who will eventually accompany you on this unforgettable experience.

At the ancient Borgo Brunelli, after a hearty breakfast, you will find a detailed map that will enable you to reach the trailhead.
